The ikurriña (Basque flag) was designed in 1894 by brothers Sabino and Luis Arana. The colors carry meaning: red for the Basque people, green for the Oak of Gernika (a symbol of Basque freedom), and white for God. Banned under Franco from 1938–1977, flying it was an act of defiance. It became official in 1979.
The lauburu at its center is far older—an ancient Basque symbol meaning "four heads." Predating Christianity, it represents the cycle of life: birth, growth, death, and rebirth. You'll see it on gravestones, farmhouses, and shoulders from Bilbao to Bakersfield.
